Wooden bag, wooden briefcase, Monacca wooden kaku bag from Designer Takumi Shimamura I’m not sure if a wooden briefcase exudes the “I care about the earth and forests” attitude, or if it represents the “I like to chop down tree’s for my personal gain” mentality.  Well, according to the company, these handmade wooden/canvas/leather beauties are crafted out of ecological thinned Japanese ceder; that means the wood is already being thinned from the forests and the bags are made secondary.
Monacca’s thinned timber products designed by Takumi Shimamura are produced by Essasu Umajimura Co., Ltd, which is a semi-public company owned by Umaji Village, at least they know they’ll do what’s best for the community.

The Kaku bags come in 4 main colors; Plain, Mocha, Tannin, and Brown, there’s even a new pink line for women!

Umaji Village in Kouchi established a “Millennium forest fund” in an effort to preserve the Japanese forest.  When the forest becomes too dense, not only does tree growth suffer, but lack of sun-light causes other forest resources to diminish.  The company thins the wood and uses it to make its various products while contributing 1% of the sales to fund for forest maintenance.
