If the ridiculous specs on the Red One Camera impressed you, then the 5K Epic will mushroom cloud your brain like Mount Vesuvius.  The Epic, due out in early 2009 is a step above it’s predecessor, (the Red One) which is already the top of the camcorder food chain.  Like the original, the Epic features a fully upgradalbe sensor, body, boards and mount and it’s compatible with most of the Red One accessories.  Before I give you the specs, click on the chart for a better look at why hi-def sucks and Jim Jannard is the man.

From Oakley founder Jim Jannard, comes a serious piece of cinematographic equipment. The RED ONE Camera is designed to be a modular, up-gradable system, that doubles as a sub-machine gun (or at least looks like it will). Users can add hardware, software, storage, handling and monitoring accessories as they become more serious about filming. But hold on, that’s not even the best part:

The typical high-end HD camcorder has a 2.1M pixel sensors and records with 3:1:1 color sub-sampled video at up to 30fps. The Red has 11.4M pixels, 2x over-sampled HD in 4:4:4 or 4:2:2, or your choice of 4K, 3K, or 2K Mysterium Super 35mm cine sized (24.4 x 13.7mm) sensor resolution quality delivering up to 30fps, 60fps, or 120fps respectively; and all this with wide dynamic range and color space in 12 bit native RAW. At 4K, that’s more than 5 times the amount of information available every second, and with vastly superior recording quality.
